June marks the official start of the hurricane season forecasted to be below average.
At this moment, Tropical Storm Bill is approaching the Texas coast with winds at 60 mph with higher gusts, says the National Weather Service. Bill’s tempting the fates with the threat of heavy rainfall up to 8-inches and possible amounts up to 12 inches in places. Bill is purported to cause widespread flash flooding through midweek across Texas and 4 other states: Oklahoma, Arkansas, Missouri and Illinois.

New England just got pounded with one of the worst blizzards in recent memory. It was so severe that some parts of the area experienced hurricane force winds and a state of emergency was declared that prompted the deployment of the National Guard to the region to keep order and make sure people stayed safe. Less than a week later, another snow storm dumped over a foot in Massachusetts. The threat of roofs collapsing from the weight of all the accumulated snow is a real and present danger.
Webinar helps adjusters identify illicit goods
Think “contraband” and a pile of booted DVDs, iPads, Oxycontin and Rolex watches may pop in your head. But for property owners and claims adjusters, a contraband item may be the Persian rug under your feet that was purchased cheaply somewhere after the Iranian trade embargo. If an item is illegal to possess then it’s likely un-claimable.
Our recent Product Advisory Group session prompted a lively debate from our carrier customers on the best way to incent policyholders to create their own contents inventory – and preferably pre-loss.
While most of our customers utilize a variety of online tools to help their insureds recreate inventories in both pre- and post-loss scenarios, the usage has been light, with adoption slower than anticipated. Despite warnings to video your home and contents, and lodge the video in a safe deposit box, or to store footage in the cloud, it’s human nature to ignore this step, thinking it won’t happen to you.
